Due to the importance of exact modeling and forecasting mortality rate in many demographic and actuarial decisions, we present singular spectrum analysis (SSA), a nonparametric method in analyzing time series as a superior model in modeling and forecasting mortality rate. This study is based on comparing the results of this method with members of a well-known frequently-used family of mortality models known as Lee-Carter family. So far, numerous articles have been developed in regard of the competency of SSA at modeling and forecasting many time series. The current paper is a new attempt to study another capability of this method in modeling and forecasting mortality rate. According to our results, it can be concluded that in most cases, SSA is more accurate than members of Lee-Carter family; hence due to the nonparametric nature of this method, in case other theoretical aspects develop, it can be considered as an effective method in modeling and forecasting mortality rate.
